Look for descriptive terms like &#8220;compact,&#8221; &#8220;dwarf,&#8221; &#8220;patio&#8221; or &#8220;determinate&#8221; for best success. Superb for sauces and tarts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Select large-fruited Tomatoes such as beefsteaks for slicing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteflowerfarm.com\/paste-tomatoes.html\">paste varieties<\/a>&nbsp;(sometimes also called plum Tomatoes) for sauce or juice, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteflowerfarm.com\/cherry-tomatoes.html\">cherries<\/a> for salads and snacks, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteflowerfarm.com\/heirloom-tomatoes.html\">heirlooms<\/a> for their unique flavors and historic appeal. The following terms also will help you choose the right varieties for your purposes:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2093\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2093\" style=\"width: 425px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteflowerfarm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Tomato-Bush-Early-Girl.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2093 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.whiteflowerfarm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Tomato-Bush-Early-Girl.jpg\" alt=\"Tomato Bush Early Girl\" width=\"425\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wffblog.mi9retail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Tomato-Bush-Early-Girl.jpg 425w, https:\/\/wffblog.mi9retail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Tomato-Bush-Early-Girl-300x265.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2093\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tomato &#8216;Bush Early Girl&#8217; &#8211; Expect high yields of medium-size Tomatoes from this compact, bushy, early fruiting hybrid. Great for slicing and salads.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Determinate<\/strong>\u201d means the plants stop growing at a certain height, rather than continuing to grow all summer. Their fruits ripen all at once so you&#8217;ll have a single harvest (which is terrific for things like making sauce or canning), rather than the ongoing or more staggered harvest provided by Indeterminate varieties. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteflowerfarm.com\/determinate-tomatoes\">Determinate varieties<\/a> grow well in containers because they are more compact and need less staking.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2094\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2094\" style=\"width: 425px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteflowerfarm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Tomato-Cherokee-Purple.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2094 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.whiteflowerfarm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Tomato-Cherokee-Purple.jpg\" alt=\"Tomato 'Cherokee Purple'\" width=\"425\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wffblog.mi9retail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Tomato-Cherokee-Purple.jpg 425w, https:\/\/wffblog.mi9retail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Tomato-Cherokee-Purple-300x265.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2094\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tomato &#8216;Cherokee Purple&#8217; &#8211; A longtime favorite, this heirloom produces delicious beefsteak Tomatoes. Yields don&#8217;t always match what you get from some other beefsteaks, but &#8216;Cherokee Purple&#8217; has the flavor you&#8217;ll remember.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteflowerfarm.com\/indeterminate-tomatoes\">\u201c<strong>Indeterminate<\/strong>\u201d Tomatoes<\/a> are a good choice for planting out in gardens because they produce higher yields and continue growing as long as the weather is warm and sunny. Their vines will sprawl over the ground unless you stake or cage them; or you can cover the ground with mulch to keep the fruits from touching the soil. A few of our favorite varieties are the snack-size cherry&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteflowerfarm.com\/4888-product.html\">\u2018Sungold\u2019<\/a> and heirloom&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteflowerfarm.com\/4877-product.html\">\u2018Black Prince\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRipens XXX days from transplant\u201d means fruits will ripen and be ready for picking in roughly the number of days that are given in place of the XXXs above. The countdown starts on the date you plant a particular Tomato in the ground or in a container.
